Brief

The internet is full of tips, techniques and tricks about being an artist. A quick Google search of ‘how to write a song’ reveals over 2,33,00,00,000 results. Most of them can help you in your process, but applying formulas and algorithms to write a song or create an artwork presents two problems –

1. The Sacrilege by Imitation

Imitation makes you sound too similar to your influences. It could set you up for a possible imposter syndrome.

2. Death by Monotony

The monotony of a program makes your songs sound similar and you keep composing the same stuff repeatedly.

To unlock your true potential and to stand out, you need to understand how the mind perceives and then makes art.

Indie 101 – The Artist’s Workshop is a workshop that introduces this approach towards art.

How Does It Work?

This workshop focuses on three core concepts

  1. Understanding the essence of art // What is art?
  2. Understanding an artist // Who is an artist?
  3. How to find yourself? // Who are you?

Three Core Philosophies/Ideas

1. Art

There is no one definition of art.

The idea is to establish freedom of expression, and separate techniques and perceptions.

2. Artist

There are as many types of artists as there are stars. No two artists are ever the same.

The idea is to establish a sense of individuality; and to allow mistakes and experiments to invoke originality.

3. Storytelling

The purpose of art is to tell a story; it is not about the story as much as it is about how you do so.

The idea is to learn how to find your story and express it.

Methodology

Understanding an Artist

“Artists are here to disturb the peace”

James Baldwin

Observing how artists function and the psychology behind their methods is critical in understanding the intricacies of art. Before you learn to write, you have to learn how to read.

Understanding and Making Behaviour Changes

“Only the wisest and stupidest of men never change”

Confucius

Making minor changes to your behaviour can lead to surprise endings. Learn how to understand your behaviour as a human, and then make relevant changes to allow the artist to come out.

Defining Yourself as an Artist

“Your understanding of your inner self holds the meaning of your life”

Leo Tolstoy

It takes decades of persistence and hard work to reach the level of a master. And even masters are unsure at times. Knowing your limits and having an open mind to situations and different opinions, opens you up as an artist.

Understanding Stories

“A good story needs only a good storyteller.”

Richard Bausch

An artist is not defined by his medium but by the efficacy of his stories. Learn how to craft stories that are coherent and meaningful.

The Result – An Efficient Storyteller

“A good story needs only a good storyteller.”

Richard Bausch

No one can tell you who you are, it is only you who holds the power to be who you want to be. It starts with small steps though. This workshop will align you in the proper direction, without ever dictating or advocating a certain specific opinion.

The goal is for you to understand your behaviour and make the proper adjustments, and I will help you through your way.

By the end of the program, you should have achieved a novel insight into yourself who you are as an artist and what your originality is.

You shall be crafting stories and songs that are coherent as well as meaningful.
